Fatima – 12 years old, Banjul

“I walk to school for two hours every morning. My brothers said girls shouldn’t go, but I wanted to show them they were wrong. “Now I want to be a teacher and help people like me.”
Fatima is the first person in her family to finish 6th grade

Aisha – 15 years old, Central River

“I almost quit school because there were no girls’ bathrooms.” My teacher helped us start a project to get clean water, and it made a big difference.
Now she is in charge of a group that fights for girls’ rights to clean schools.

Maimuna – 13 years old, Upper River Region

“Our village never had a secondary school. I used to spend all day helping my mom farm. I still help after school, but I want to be a nurse one day.
She walks 6 kilometers every day and is the best in her class.

Bintu – 14 years old, Brikama

“People laughed when I said I wanted to learn how to code.” My teacher told me to join a digital club, and now I’m teaching other people.
She made a simple educational app with a laptop that someone gave her.

Isatou – 11 years old, Janjanbureh

“I made my own schoolbooks out of scrap paper because we couldn’t buy them.” My teacher saw that I was trying and gave me his old ones.
She is now teaching younger girls in her village how to read.

Awa – 16 years old, Kerewan

“My uncle told me that girls shouldn’t go to school. He cried when I showed him my test scores and said he was wrong.

She is now applying for a national science scholarship.
